2026 Prague
January 2026
It’s been a number of years since I travelled solo outside the UK, thanks to Covid and starting a family. I decided to break the trend by going away for my birthday. I chose Prague, mostly due to cheap flights and the fact that I still had ~11,000 CZK sitting around from a previous trip.
Day One
My flight arrived in Prague late morning. I got the bus into town and immediately headed somewhere for lunch. I knew it would be touristy, but I went straight to the Výtopna Railway Restaurant. Honestly, I wanted something easy and tourist-friendly - plus, I really like model trains.
I went for a walk around the Old Town and checked into my hotel (Hotel Clement, literally next door to where I stayed back in 2015) to grab a shower and freshen up. Later, I took a short walk up to Letna Park and paid to visit the National Technical Museum. As I said: I like trains 🤭.
I chilled out in the evening, watched the latest episode of The Traitors, and got an early night.
Day Two
On my second day, after the obligatory hotel breakfast, I walked up to The National Museum. I knew this had been recently refurbished, but wow - it is the fanciest museum I’ve ever been to. It’s opulently decorated yet very modern and functional, and the exhibits are brilliantly executed.
After the museum, I walked back down through the Old Town and picked up a few gifts for my wife and kids. I grabbed a coffee at Grand Café Orient, which is in a building renowned for its Cubist architecture. I’ll be honest: it was nice to see something different, but maybe I’m not cultured enough to really appreciate it.
In the evening I got a meal at Café Savoy. Again, it was nice, but nothing out of this world. However, afterwards I walked over to Hemingway Bar and had a couple of very enjoyable cocktails.
Day Three
I reluctantly got up early on the final day of my three-day trip, taking the tram to the top of Letna Park to watch the sun rise after having scouted a good location the first day. It was a bit chilly, but well worth it for the views over the city.
I spent the remainder of the day at the Prague Zoo. Despite the snow and ice which meant a lot of animals were strictly in their indoor enclosures, it is a fantastic zoo! I saw lots of animals I haven’t seen before, and there was ample space in the indoor areas to enjoy the view without feeling crowded.
